Constructing and reciting positive affirmations is a powerful tool for reprogramming your subconscious mind, shifting your focus from negative to positive thinking. The goal is to take statements of what you want to manifest and repeat them until they are deeply embedded in your subconscious. Essentially, positive affirmations leverage the exact same psychological mechanisms as negative self-talk, but in a way that actively benefits you.
Tips for Writing Effective Affirmations:
Let it simmer: Take your time with this inventory. Revisit your list daily for a full week, adding new insights as they come to you. This comprehensive list will form the foundation of what you want to improve and manifest.
Clarify your intentions: Focus on what you want to create in your life. Look at the end result, as well as the specific behaviors, attitudes, and traits you want to develop.
Inventory your strengths and weaknesses: Start by listing your physical and psychological attributes, as well as your daily habits. Don’t censor yourself—write down everything, even if it feels trivial. Some traits might even land on both lists.
Now construct your positive affirmations:
Step 1 – The ground rules
- Start with “I”: Personalize your statements. Your subconscious responds best when you speak directly to yourself.
- Write in the present tense: Act as if your goals have already materialized. Use “I am” rather than “I will be.”
- Keep it strictly positive: Focus on what you want to create, not what you want to avoid. Instead of “I don’t want to drink coffee anymore,” use “I choose to be caffeine-free and energized.”
- Flip your weaknesses: Transform your current struggles into positive realities. For example, change “I am anxious and stressed” to “I am relaxed and calm in all situations.”
- Amplify your strengths: If you already have a trait you are proud of, include it to enhance it further.
Step 2: – Put Them Into Practice
- Keep them accessible: Type your list into your phone so you always have them with you.
- Speak them aloud: Give your words power by vocalizing them. For maximum impact, say them in front of a mirror while looking yourself directly in the eye.
- Repetition is key: Read these subconscious updates throughout the day until you know them by heart. If you want a specific target, aim to repeat them 9 times daily.
- Evolve your list: Your affirmations aren’t set in stone. Modify and update them as you progress through your training and throughout your life.
Note: Your affirmations don’t need to be long or complex—keep them simple and impactful. Take a look at my personal examples below to see how it’s done.
